When Is a Belief a Value—and When Is It a Claim?
Some beliefs express what matters to us; others make claims about how the world works. “People deserve a second chance” is mainly a value. “Giving someone another chance will improve the outcome” also makes a prediction that could be examined.
The two can sit inside the same sentence, which makes disagreement harder to understand: are we debating what matters, what is likely to happen, or both?
When a belief is challenged, how do you tell which part reflects a value and which part is a claim that could be checked?
