Make a Small, Shared Glossary for Important Phrases
A phrase can be meant kindly and still sound different to the person hearing it. “Take your time,” for example, might feel reassuring—or leave someone unsure whether a reply is still wanted. The words alone don’t tell us what either person intends.
Try a tiny shared glossary: choose one phrase that comes up often. Each person can say what they hear in it, what they mean when they use it, and—if useful—what wording would feel clearer. You don’t have to reach one official definition; the point is to make room for both meanings.
Keep it easy to revise. A phrase that helps in one moment may not fit another, and either person can pass on the conversation.
