Turn a Value Into Words Someone Can Understand

Values can sound clear in a single word—until someone asks what that word means in practice.

Try this small writing exercise: choose one value and finish the sentence, “This matters to me when…” Then add a specific action or choice that would show it. For example, “respect matters to me when people can disagree without being mocked” says more than the label alone—and leaves room to discuss what respectful disagreement looks like.

The point isn’t to define the value for everyone. It’s to make your meaning easier to meet, question, or refine. A concrete example can open a conversation without turning one sentence into a permanent definition of who you are.
