Delegate the Decision Space, Not Just the Task

Delegation often leaves one question unanswered: which decisions can the new owner make without asking again? When that boundary is unclear, work may move while authority stays behind.

Try a short delegation brief for one task:

  • The outcome and constraints
  • Decisions the owner can make independently
  • What should be escalated—and to whom
  • A check-in point for feedback, not permission by default

At the review, ask whether the boundary enabled progress or left someone carrying an unclear risk. The task owner remains visible, while collaborators know where their contributions fit. If the brief needs a committee to explain it, simplify it before adding another meeting.
