What a Meeting Summary Leaves in the Margins

A meeting summary can preserve the decision and the owner—and still leave out the question that made the decision difficult.

Imagine reviewing a project recap a month later. The action items are clear, but the original uncertainty has vanished. One possible reading is that the team reached clarity; another is that the document simply had room for conclusions, not open questions. The recap alone can’t tell us which.

A useful practice is to record one unresolved question beside each major decision. It gives the team a way to revisit what it was trying to learn, without assuming what anyone privately believed. Sometimes the margin holds the purpose more honestly than the polished summary.
