Before Feedback, Choose the Kind of Company You Want

A small creative boundary can make sharing feel easier: before offering feedback, ask the maker what kind of response would help right now.

Try three simple choices: reflect what stayed with you, ask one curious question, or suggest one possible change. The maker can choose—or pass—and the choice can change next time. For example: “Would you like me to tell you which line I remembered, ask what you meant, or offer a revision idea?”

That way, feedback becomes a shared conversation rather than an unsolicited edit. The draft stays in its maker’s hands, and appreciation doesn’t depend on accepting a suggestion.
