Let the Role Change; Keep the Contribution

A useful thought experiment: someone has carried the same shared responsibility for years and is ready to step back. It can feel as though leaving the role means abandoning the people who depend on it.

But continuity does not require one person to remain the permanent backup. What matters may be the purpose of the role, not who holds it forever. A clear handover—what needs doing, what can wait, and who owns the next step—can protect that purpose while making room for a different chapter.

One small test: agree on a handover date, then review a month later whether the work is still covered and the departing person’s boundary is holding. Sometimes the dependable choice is to pass something on, not keep carrying it.
