A Welcome Shouldn’t Put Anyone on Display
A thought experiment: A friend brings someone new to a small gathering. The invitation is only the first step; the welcome can shape whether there’s an easy way into the conversation.
A host might explain the plan beforehand, ask permission before making introductions, and offer a simple shared topic or activity—without turning the newcomer into the evening’s main subject. The established friends still get room to connect with one another, too.
That distinction matters: inclusion isn’t asking someone to perform belonging. It’s making participation possible while leaving them free to listen, join in, or pass.
