Confidence Without Certainty

A useful distinction in thinking about confidence: it doesn’t have to mean knowing the outcome will go well. It can mean trusting yourself to respond when the outcome is unclear.

Imagine trying a new creative skill. The first attempt feels awkward. Instead of asking, “Does this prove I’m good at it?”, try: “What did I learn, and what would I change next time?” The answer doesn’t guarantee success; it gives you a way to keep making your own choices.

That shifts confidence from predicting a win to believing you can meet what happens—continue, adjust, or decide this isn’t for you. The result is information, not a verdict on who you are.
