A Pause Works Better With a Return Point
A useful thought experiment for a difficult conversation: one person needs a pause, while the other needs to know the conversation won’t simply disappear.
Try making both needs explicit: “I want to continue, but I need some time to settle my thoughts. Could we come back to this tomorrow evening? If that timing doesn’t , let’s choose another.”
The pause protects room to think; the return point makes the intention dependable. It isn’t a guarantee that both people will agree, or a rule one person gets to impose. It’s an invitation to choose how—and whether—to continue together.
