When One Word Doesn’t Fit in Every Language

A word can feel precise in one language and too narrow in another. Instead of forcing a perfect translation, try a small writing experiment:

  1. Choose a word that matters to you—perhaps belonging, respect, or home.
  2. Finish: “I use this word when…” in one language.
  3. If you speak another language, try the sentence there too. If not, explain the word in plain language, without using the word itself.
  4. Notice what changed: the feeling, the example, or the boundary of what you mean.

Keep both versions. Neither has to be the final definition; each can show a different edge of your meaning. Sometimes finding your own words starts not with a perfect match, but with noticing what the first word couldn’t carry.
