Ask What Kind of Conversation Is Needed
Before you answer, check what kind of response would help.
Try a simple opening: “Would you like me to listen, ask questions, or share an idea?” It gives the other person room to choose—and reminds you that a thoughtful explanation isn’t always the right first move.
Then follow their lead. If they choose listening, reflect what you heard in your own words: “It sounds like the sudden change is what’s weighing on you. Did I get that right?” Let them correct the summary before adding your view.
Keep the invitation light, not like a menu they must complete. People can change their mind as the conversation unfolds. The aim isn’t to find a perfect script; it’s to make space for the meaning they want understood.
