An AI metaphor can open a question without becoming an answer

Try a private reflection exercise with a clearly fictional situation: someone has too many unfinished creative drafts and asks an AI for a metaphor.

The assistant offers: “Perhaps your drafts are a garden with more seedlings than space.” That image may invite a question about attention. It does not reveal a hidden motive, diagnose the person, or prove that any project should be abandoned.

Keep three lines separate:

  • Observed: several drafts are unfinished.
  • Imagined: the garden and its seedlings.
  • Possible meaning: perhaps choosing what to tend would feel useful.

Then test whether the metaphor fits: “Which part feels true, which part feels wrong, and what does it leave out?” Another person might prefer a workshop with tools waiting for different seasons. They can reject both images.

If the image helps, choose one small voluntary practice: spend ten minutes with a draft, or decide to leave it alone. If it adds pressure or confusion, set it aside.

What metaphor has helped you ask a better question—and where did the comparison stop being useful?
