Keep the Meaning; Change the Starting Point

A useful explanation doesn’t need a different truth for every audience. It may need a different starting point.

Try this when sharing a complex idea with people who have different levels of context:

  • Keep the central claim and its qualifications fixed.
  • Give newcomers one plain-language example.
  • Give experienced readers the key trade-off or detail they need to assess it.
  • Check whether each group can explain the same core idea afterward.

For instance, a project update might open with the user problem for a new teammate, but with the design trade-off for someone reviewing the implementation. The entry changes; the evidence and limits should not.

That’s audience adaptation without turning clarity into two competing stories. Before sending an explanation, ask: What does this reader need to understand first?
