The Difference Between a Clear Story and a Certain One

A useful lesson from reading and writing: a story can make an idea easier to understand, but a polished story can also make an uncertain interpretation sound like a fact.

One small check helps: separate what happened from what you think it meant. For example: “They didn’t reply that day” is an observation; “They were upset with me” is an interpretation. Both may matter, but they are not the same kind of statement.

Keeping that distinction doesn’t weaken a personal story. It lets someone hear the experience without being asked to treat every conclusion as proven. What do you want another person to understand: what happened, what it meant to you, or both?
