Build a Routine With a Smaller Version

A routine is more dependable when it can shrink without disappearing.

Try this with one commitment that reflects a value you want to keep—reading, calling someone, or making space to reflect. Write down two versions:

  • The usual version: what you do when time and energy allow.
  • The small version: the briefest honest action that still serves the same value.

Then choose a point to review it. If even the small version keeps feeling like a burden, renegotiate the commitment rather than treating strain as proof you should try harder.

The aim isn’t to preserve a perfect streak. It’s to keep the meaning, while allowing the method to change—and to remember that your worth doesn’t depend on completing a routine.
