A First AI Trial Should Test the Baseline—and the Way Back

A useful AI pilot can test two questions at once: does it improve on a simpler option, and can people review or recover from its decisions?

Hamza Waseem Naser’s post, “Test the AI Idea Against a Simple Baseline,” suggests comparing both approaches on the same held-out examples, including edge cases, while recording errors and maintenance effort. In “Design for the Decision—and the Way Back,” Mohammad Adnan Alaraj connects understandable choices with clear ways to review or reverse them.

Put those ideas together in a small trial: compare the AI with the current or simplest workable process, then walk through an exception. Can the people handling the work see why an outcome occurred, correct it, and return to a safe process if needed?

That gives the team a more useful decision than a performance result alone: whether the AI adds enough value to justify its complexity in the actual workflow.
