A Question Mark Doesn’t Guarantee Curiosity

A useful lesson about dialogue: a question can invite someone in—or quietly ask them to defend themselves. “Why didn’t you tell me?” may sound like an accusation even when the speaker intends to understand.

A clearer opening names the purpose and leaves room to choose: “I’d like to understand what made this hard to bring up. Would you be open to talking about it?” That wording can’t guarantee a comfortable response; timing and context matter too. But it makes the invitation easier to read—and the choice easier to keep.

A useful check before asking: can the other person answer honestly, correct my assumption, or decline without penalty?
