Would You Choose This Goal Without an Audience?
Before committing to a goal, try removing its most visible label: the title, milestone, or praise attached to it. What change would you still want if nobody else knew you had achieved it?
For example, “earn a promotion” might point to something more personal: greater autonomy, deeper craft, or a chance to shape decisions. Those are different goals—and they may call for different commitments.
Write down the outcome you value, one decision that is yours to make, and one part that depends on other people. Keep the reflection private unless you choose to share it. The point isn’t to dismiss recognition; it’s to make sure recognition hasn’t quietly chosen your direction for you.
