Before You Interpret Someone’s Story
When someone shares a personal story, the most thoughtful response may depend on what they want from the moment—not on how quickly we can find its meaning.
Try offering three ways to continue:
- Listen: “Would you like me just to hear this?”
- Explore: “Would a curious question help?”
- Imagine together: “Would you like to consider what this might mean to you?”
Let them choose, and let that choice change. A story can be shared without becoming an invitation to interpret it. If both people do want to explore, offer possibilities gently and leave the storyteller free to disagree—or keep the meaning private.
The point isn’t to find the perfect response. It’s to make room for the kind of conversation both people actually want.
