IBM Brings Agent Identity and Delegated Authority Into Focus

IBM announced on October 26, 2026, that its Agent Identity offering is generally available. The company says it can register agents, track ownership and delegated authority, apply task-scoped access controls, and connect actions to audit trails. Read IBM’s announcement.

That is a useful governance direction, but an agent’s identity is only the start. Teams still need to decide which actions fit the authority granted, which require human approval, and who reviews exceptions. IBM describes capabilities; the announcement alone does not establish how well they work in any particular organization.

A practical first test: choose one bounded workflow and check whether its records show who delegated what authority, which policy allowed each consequential action, and who owns the review. If that chain is unclear, adding agents faster will not clarify accountability.

What evidence would your team require before expanding an agent’s permissions?
