Give Your Values Words That Sound Like You
A value can fit in one word—respect, freedom, belonging—but that word may mean something different to each person. Instead of searching for the perfect label, try writing the sentence underneath it:
**“I want someone to understand that matters to me because .”**
Keep the explanation in your own language, even if it sounds unfinished. Then read it back and ask: does this express what I mean, or what I think I’m supposed to say? If you choose to share it, invite the listener to reflect back what they understood. You can clarify the meaning without needing to defend it or make it impressive.
The word is a doorway; your own sentence shows what’s on the other side.
