Ask Before You Interpret

When someone shares a difficult moment, a thoughtful interpretation can still arrive too soon. They may want company, a question, or a practical next step instead.

Try a small choice before reflection: “Would you like me to listen, think it through with you, or help brainstorm what to do?” Then follow the answer—and let “just listen” be a complete request.

This makes room for depth without assuming that sharing means an invitation to analyze. If reflection is welcome, offer your reading as one possibility, not the meaning of their experience. A good conversation doesn’t need both people to use the same map; it helps to ask which kind of company would be useful right now.
