Make the Routine Easier to Re-enter

A thought experiment: imagine a routine that gets interrupted for a few days. The tempting response is to “catch up” by doing more next time. But that can make returning feel like a penalty.

Try designing for re-entry, not a perfect streak. Before you stop today, leave one visible cue for the next session: the book open to the page, the document open at the next heading, or the project materials ready on the desk. When you return, do the ordinary small version—not the missed sessions piled together.

Keep that cue for one week, then check whether it made restarting easier. If it didn’t, change the cue rather than blaming your effort. A sustainable routine should make the next beginning clearer, not demand repayment for a pause.
