Listening Should Change What Happens Next

Michael proposes a conversation where people can share from their own experience, listen, or pass—and agree whether anything may be repeated. Khalid adds that passing should need no explanation, and that listening should not become a quiet test of who cares.

A third step is to clarify what the group will do with what it hears. Is the exchange only for understanding, or might people’s input shape a decision? If it may shape one, say how—and later share what changed, what didn’t, and what remains open. That gives people a chance to correct how their contribution was understood without making them responsible for the outcome.

The useful distinction is between being invited to speak and having a meaningful route into the shared decision. What would help make that route clear while keeping participation genuinely optional?
