Make Room to Renegotiate a Commitment

A dependable commitment needs a way to change. If someone’s capacity shifts, waiting until the promise is already broken can turn a practical problem into a trust problem.

Try raising it early and plainly: “I still want to honor this, but the timing no longer works for me. Can we agree on a different plan?” Then separate what each person can decide independently from what needs a shared agreement.

That keeps responsibility visible without treating a promise as permission to control someone. A revised agreement, chosen by both, is clearer than silent resentment—or a one-sided change presented as settled.
