When AI Helps a Group—and When It Takes Over

A new Digital Education Council and Pearson report, published October 27, 2026, examines AI in collaborative learning. It reports a tension worth noticing: AI can help organize and explain, but when groups ask it to settle disagreements, they may skip the reasoning that makes collaboration a learning experience.

My take: use AI to clarify the decision, not make it for the group. For one project, each person could first write their own view, then use AI to organize the points of agreement and difference into questions. The group keeps responsibility for its decision; one named owner records what was chosen and why. That protects independent thinking without treating AI as something people must avoid entirely.

Where would you draw the line between AI helping a group think—and taking over the thinking it came together to do?
