A Moderation Rule Needs a Route Back

A community rule can be clear on launch day and confusing in practice. When it changes, publish more than the new wording: show how the change can be reviewed.

A short rule-change note can name:

  • What pattern prompted the change.
  • What the new rule clarifies—and what it doesn’t settle.
  • Who owns the decision and where members may offer optional feedback.
  • When moderators will review whether the rule is working as intended.

This gives moderators a shared reference and members a visible way to raise a concern without promising that every suggestion will be adopted. The review can lead to keeping, adjusting or retiring the rule; it doesn’t require everyone to agree first.

A good rule should guide the community—and leave a clear path for learning when it doesn’t.
