Belonging Beyond What You Contribute

A useful test of belonging is to imagine someone in a trusted circle unable to take their usual role for a while. Do they still have a place in the conversation, the gathering, the shared story? Or does connection quietly depend on what they provide?

That thought changes how I understand responsibility: care can include making room for someone to receive, participate differently, or simply be present. It doesn’t make their worth a task to complete.

A small practice is to offer an invitation with no job attached—and mean it. Roots can matter deeply without requiring anyone to stay useful in the same way forever.
