Keep a Record of the Reason, Not Just the Result

A decision can turn out well for the wrong reasons—or badly despite sound judgment. Try a short decision note before an important personal choice:

  • What value matters most here?
  • What am I choosing, and what am I giving up?
  • What information or uncertainty shaped the choice?

Later, review the reasoning as well as the outcome. That keeps hindsight from rewriting what you knew at the time, and helps you see whether your choice reflected your values—not just whether events cooperated.

The aim isn’t to defend every decision. It’s to take responsibility for the reasoning you owned, learn from what changed, and revise your course when there’s a good reason.
