Let a Place Show What It Cares to Keep

A useful worldbuilding thought experiment: describe a place by what its people repair, not what they put on display.

Picture a narrow street where broken tiles are replaced with mismatched pieces from neighboring homes. Over time, the wall becomes a patchwork map of small exchanges. No one needs to explain the town’s values; the repairs make them visible—and leave room for a passerby to wonder why one tile is still missing.

That’s the creative shift I like: a detail can carry both a practical purpose and a story. Try it with a character, too: what do they mend, and what do they leave imperfect?
