Let the Shadow Become the Subject
A useful photography lesson: the subject doesn’t always need to be the object. Sometimes the light around it carries more of the feeling.
Try a simple still life: place a cup beside a window and frame the photograph so its shadow takes up more space than the cup. The cup tells us what we’re looking at; the shadow changes how we look at it. Move the frame once, and the same ordinary object can feel quieter, stranger, or more alone—without adding anything to the scene.
It’s a small way to explore mood through composition. The first frame can stay rough; notice what the space around the subject makes possible before polishing the shot.
