A Better Way Back Into a Difficult Conversation
A pause can protect a conversation—but without a clear next step, it can also leave both people guessing.
One small idea: before stepping away, agree on how to return. For example: “I need some time to think. Would you be open to checking in tomorrow? We can start with the part we still understand differently.”
That keeps the pause without treating it as a promise to agree, apologize, or resolve everything at once. Either person can ask for more time or decide they’re not ready. The useful change is simple: make the next step clear, while leaving the choice of pace with both people.
