One Small Rule Can Give a Fictional Place Its Character
A useful worldbuilding lesson: a place can feel distinctive when one simple rule changes everyday life. You don’t need a whole history before the setting starts to take shape.
Imagine a town where nobody uses clocks. Instead, the day’s changes are marked by sounds: a low bell opens the market, shutters creak at dusk, and someone plays three notes when the rain is coming. That one constraint can shape the town’s rhythm, its meeting places, even the details a character notices.
Try inventing one rule for a place, then sketch three ordinary details it would change. Keep the draft private if you like; the point is to see what the idea makes possible before you polish it.
