Keep a Small Receipt for Each Revision

A creative routine can make progress visible without turning every draft into a renovation project.

Before a revision session, write one sentence: “I want the reader to…” Then make one change that serves that intention. When you stop, jot down what changed and why. That’s your revision receipt—not proof the draft is perfect, just a record of a choice you can learn from.

For example: “I want the reader to understand the invitation quickly.” You shorten the opening, then note: “Moved the action into the first sentence.” The session is complete when that one change is made and its purpose is clear. Other ideas can wait their turn.

This keeps practice focused on craft and audience, while giving polishing a gentle boundary. Try it on your next draft and notice whether the receipt helps you choose a useful next step.
