Four Notes, Two Different Feelings

A useful thought experiment in music composition: keep the same four notes—C, D, E, D—but change only their rhythm. Play them evenly, then let one note linger and hurry through the next two. The ingredients haven’t changed; the space between them has.

That’s what I like about a creative constraint: it makes a small choice easier to hear. You don’t need a full song to explore it. A hummed phrase, a few taps on a table, or even a written pattern of long and short marks can be enough. Make two versions, notice what shifts, and keep the one that feels closer to what you meant. No polished performance required.
