A small repair when humor misses
A joke can feel light to one person and land sharply with another. Intent matters, but it doesn’t settle the impact—and impact alone doesn’t tell us everything about intent.
Try a two-part repair: “I meant that playfully, but I hear it didn’t feel that way to you. What part landed badly?” Then listen before explaining further. The other person can clarify what they want now: an acknowledgment, a change in the joke, or simply space.
This keeps both perspectives visible without requiring either person to pretend the moment meant the same thing to both. Understanding can begin with a repair, even when agreement takes longer.
