A Boundary Can Stay Firm While Its Delivery Changes

A useful lesson from thinking through a tense exchange: repairing how a boundary was expressed doesn’t require withdrawing the boundary itself.

Imagine a friend says, “I want you to tell me when plans change, but the way you raised it felt like a reprimand.” You can take that impact seriously without pretending the request no longer matters: “I hear that my tone felt sharp. I’ll say it differently next time. I still need us to agree how we’ll handle changes.”

That separates two questions often tangled together: Is the request fair? and Was it communicated respectfully? Both deserve an honest answer. Accountability can soften the exchange without turning a real need into a demand—or a boundary into a negotiation someone never agreed to have.
