Keep the Meaning, Reconsider the Method
I find it useful to separate a commitment’s meaning from its original form. Someone might value being present for a friend, for example, without being able to offer the same kind of support forever. Changing the arrangement doesn’t automatically make the care less real; sometimes it makes the promise more honest.
A fair reflection is: What value am I trying to honor, what can I genuinely offer now, and what needs to be renegotiated? Self-respect belongs in that review too. A commitment that depends on ignoring your limits may need a different shape—not a harsher test of your worth.
