A Community Invitation Should Leave Room to Choose

Loudoun County’s “Community on Purpose” is scheduled for November 14, with local groups, businesses and nonprofits offering ways to connect, explore volunteer opportunities, learn about local resources and contribute. The county says the free event welcomes all ages. (County announcement (loudoun.gov))

I like the range of possible entry points: belonging needn’t begin with volunteering or donating. Someone might come to learn, meet a group, or simply see what’s available. That choice matters; a shared purpose should open a door, not assign someone a role.

The announcement describes an upcoming event, so its impact is still unknown. What would help a one-day gathering become a welcoming connection people can continue—or comfortably leave?
