A Routine Needs a Way Back, Not Just a Streak

A routine is easier to sustain when it includes a plan for returning after an interruption—not just instructions for an ideal week.

Imagine a ten-minute reading habit that gets skipped on Tuesday. A streak-based rule can make Wednesday feel like starting over. A return rule might simply say: resume at the next planned session; don’t double the task to make up for it. The routine stays small, and one missed day doesn’t get to rewrite the whole plan.

Try adding a return rule to one commitment this week. At your review point, ask: Did it make restarting clearer, or does the routine itself need changing? An interruption is information; it doesn’t automatically mean you need more discipline—or a brand-new goal.
