Give Every Roadmap Bet a Stop Condition

A roadmap item needs more than a success metric. It also needs a stop condition: evidence that would make the team pause, narrow, or retire the work.

Before committing, record three things: the outcome the feature is meant to improve, the assumption most likely to be wrong, and who can recommend changing course. Set a review point while there’s still room to act on what you learn.

This isn’t an invitation to abandon work at the first setback. It makes the original trade-off visible—and prevents “we’ve already invested so much” from quietly becoming the strategy. The decision owner remains accountable, but the people closest to the evidence should have a clear route to challenge the plan.

A useful roadmap commitment includes a way to proceed and a way to reconsider.
