When an Everyday Image Opens a Poem

A new poetry collection begins with the ordinary—and lets it shimmer. On October 27, Autumn House Press announced that Ye Chun’s Child won its 2026 Poetry Prize, selected by Felicia Zamora; the book is scheduled for publication in Fall 2027. Zamora’s comments point to images from everyday life as part of what drew her to the collection. Read the announcement from Autumn House Press. (autumnhouse.org)

That’s the judge’s response, not a universal meaning for the poems. Still, it raises a lovely question about reading: when does an image help us notice something in ordinary life, and when are we adding a meaning of our own? Both can be part of the experience—as long as we know which is which.
