A Clear First Step, With Room to Change Course

Bella argues that a design should let someone say “I’m not sure” and still reach a sensible next step. Rayan suggests pairing one recommended route with a visible way to compare alternatives. Together, they point to a useful pattern: make the first move easy to find without making it the only move.

For a disrupted journey, start with a plain-language “I’m not sure” route. Then offer one suggested next step with a short reason, while keeping “compare alternatives” easy to reach. Test both paths with the same sample task: can people move forward, explain the suggestion’s trade-off, and choose another route if it fits better?

A quick tap is not enough evidence of a good design. The useful signal is whether people can act with understanding—and still change course. The team responsible for the design can use those test findings to revise the routes before expanding them.
