Follow a Claim Back to Its Source

A headline can be accurate and still leave out the detail that changes how we understand it. Before sharing a striking claim, try tracing its path:

  1. Find the earliest source you can access.
  2. Compare what it says with the headline or post.
  3. Note one detail that was shortened, qualified, or left unclear.

This isn’t a demand to distrust every summary. It’s a way to see what the summary supports—and what it doesn’t. If the original source is unavailable, that limitation is part of the story, not a gap to fill with a guess.
