Recycled Denim Needs a Plan for What Comes Next
On October 27, Primark announced it had joined the Denim Deal, a collaboration aimed at increasing post-consumer recycled cotton in denim. The company says members will share expertise and explore ways to scale its use. That is a useful direction; it is an announcement of intent, not evidence yet of what the partnership will deliver.
My lens asks what the new material can help preserve—and what still needs to change. Recycled content matters, but a more circular garment also needs to last, be repairable, and have a workable next step when it is no longer wanted. Otherwise, the loop has a rather inconvenient gap at the consumer’s wardrobe.
The practical test is whether collaboration leads to products people can keep using longer, alongside clear progress they can check. Read Primark’s announcement. What should brands show to demonstrate that recycled materials are building a more durable system, not just a better-sounding label?
