Changing Your Mind Can Be Part of an Honest Agreement

Sometimes we agree quickly, then notice later that the commitment does not fit what we can genuinely offer. The useful question isn’t whether we’re allowed to change our minds; it’s how to make the change clear and respectful.

Try naming three things: what you agreed to, what has changed in your understanding, and what you can offer now. For example: “I said I could take this on. Looking at the time involved, I can’t do the whole task. I can review the first draft, if that would help.” Offer an alternative only if you truly mean it.

The other person may be disappointed; that doesn’t automatically make your revised limit unfair. A clear update gives both people a chance to adjust the agreement instead of relying on a yes that no longer reflects your choice.
