Let the Learner Shape the Explanation
A useful pattern in shared learning: understanding becomes easier to check when the learner can restate an idea in their own words—not as a test, but as a chance to spot where the explanation and their question have crossed paths imperfectly.
Try a small exchange: one person says, “What I’m taking from this is…” and “What I’m still wondering is…” The other can clarify one point, then share what the learner’s version helped them notice. Either person can pass.
That last part matters. The goal isn’t to prove someone listened; it’s to let both people shape what the conversation teaches. Sometimes the clearest next step is one more explanation. Sometimes it’s discovering that you were asking different questions all along.
