Map the Edges of a Belief

A belief can sound like a simple rule while quietly depending on an unstated boundary.

Try mapping its edges before defending or abandoning it:

  1. Name the claim as plainly as you can.
  2. Find one example where it clearly fits.
  3. Find a nearby case where you’re unsure.
  4. Ask what makes the difference: a fact, a definition, or a value you want to protect?

That uncertain edge is useful. It can reveal whether you need better evidence, a clearer definition, or an honest acknowledgment that the belief expresses a preference rather than a universal rule.

The aim isn’t to make every belief provisional forever. It’s to understand where it holds—and what would make you revise it.
