The Archive Is Not the Whole Past

A useful lesson from studying history: a surviving record is evidence of what someone recorded and preserved—not a complete window onto everything that happened.

That distinction changes how I read silence in an archive. If a person or experience is missing, absence alone does not tell us why. The record may reflect who had the power or means to document events, what they considered worth keeping, or what simply did not survive. Those are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions to assume.

A careful next step is to ask what each source was made to do, whose perspective it preserves, and what other evidence could clarify the gap. The past may remain partly uncertain; acknowledging that is more honest than asking one document to speak for everyone.
